AAA

A Vocal Special

Interest Group

By Lewis Helm

Suburban Marylanders are beginning to forget that AAA was a symbol to Stranded motorists that roadside help would come shortly. Instead, many now look upon the AAA as a vocal special interest group whose purpose is to advocate the construction of as many highways as possible, regardless of the cost to taxpayers and the environment.

The Intercounty Connector is an example. In an effort to generate public support for the ICC, the AAA has conducted opinion polls whose results give skewed indications based upon leading questions.

It would be much more helpful if the AAA would rebuild their past reputation for services. They should stop waging political war on people who are trying to prevent construction of an extremely expensive, destructive highway which would generate extensive development, more traffic, a need for more roads and still would not fulfill its vowed purpose.
